The International Pharmacy Workshop (7th IPW) – 2025 will focus on “Recent Progress in the Treatment of Cancer,” a disease that is a major contributor to global mortality. In 2022, there were an estimated 20 million new cases of cancer and 9.7 million deaths from cancer globally. This burden is projected to increase by about 77% by 2050, further straining health systems.
Global and Regional Burden
In the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region alone, more than 788,000 people were diagnosed with cancer in 2022. This number is projected to double to reach 1.57 million cases by 2045, due to population growth and the high prevalence of cancer risk factors such as tobacco use, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, and air pollution. Certain infections, including hepatitis B and C and human papillomavirus (HPV), also contribute to cancer development.
The most common cancers globally are breast, lung, colon rectum, and prostate cancer. In 2020, breast cancer was the most prevalent, while lung cancer led to the highest number of deaths. Effective screening tests include mammography (for breast cancer), colonoscopy (colorectal cancer), and Papanicolaou (Pap) smear (cervical cancer).
World Cancer Day 2025
The World Cancer Day 2025 campaign, “UNITED BY UNIQUE,” is about placing people at the center of cancer care. The message, which will be heard around the world on February 4, 2025, is “United in our goals, unique in our needs.”
The scientific sessions of the 7th IPW will highlight the need to focus on New Research and Innovative Development of Anticancer drug therapy.

Dr. Luqman Rahman is a highly qualified and experienced Medical Oncologist with an impressive academic background. He graduated from a medical college in 1999 and was ranked first among the top ten graduates. He completed his internship and then pursued a master’s degree from Nottingham University in the United Kingdom. He further specialized in Medical Oncology with two years of training at City Hospital in the UK. Dr. Luqman went on to establish a specialized Medical Oncology unit for treating adult solid tumors at Nanakaly Hospital in Erbil city. He served as the head of the unit until January 2009, when he embarked on his MD PhD program in Cancer at Cancer Centrum in Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Currently, he is working as a Consultant Oncologist at Nanakaly Hospital for Blood Diseases and Oncology and holds the position of Senior Lecturer at the College of Medicine, Hawler Medical University. |

Dr. Amin Malik Shah is a pharmacologist by training. He obtained his Ph.D. in University of New South Wales, Australia after graduating from University of Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. Amin founded NatureCeuticals to further develop his research ideas into pharmaceuticals his research interest focuses on the development of drugs that target angiogenesis for the treatment of cancer. She is the Director of the Breast Centre, where she oversees the provision of specialized treatment and care for breast-related conditions. Furthermore, Dr Suzan is an Adjunct Faculty and Academic Staff Member at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH), where she is actively engaged in medical education and clinical practice.
