Basic Life Support First Aid Course
First aid significantly contributes to an ill or injured person’s recovery. The primary objective of first aid is to preserve life. First aid training focuses on providing immediate care to sick or injured patients until full medical help is available. Based on this, the Nursing Department at Tishk International University organized a course on Basic Life Support: First Aid for students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, held on February 16th and March 9th, 2023.
The course commenced with an introduction to basic life support and the importance of first aid skills for each individual, presented by Dr. Dara Abdulla, PhD in Adult Nursing and Head of the Nursing Department.
The course was divided into two sessions, the first of which focused on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Presented by Mr. Hilal Farouq, Clinical Instructor, began his presentation with “(and whoever saves the life of one person, is as if he had saved the life of all Humanity) Surah Al-Ma’idah – 32 “. During the first session, all steps of CPR and the recovery position were presented, and all participants had the opportunity to re-demonstrate it. This course aimed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge of basic life support to enable them to save lives.
Then the second session discussed first aid for choking. Presented by Mrs. Asmaa Yaseen, Clinical Instructor, the session demonstrated real choking scenarios and explained every step required to save a casualty when choking occurs. Participants actively discussed the topic and directed detailed questions to Mrs. Asmaa Yaseen, who answered all questions adequately. They also were required to demonstrate the Life Saver Maneuver, CPR and choking.
