International Epilepsy Day – Milestones Achieved Towards Mental Health and Well Being

On the 12th of February 2024, the Faculty of Pharmacy at Tishk International University (TIU) organized an insightful workshop dedicated to International Epilepsy Day. Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Samad Salahudin, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, started with a warm and heartfelt welcoming speech, setting the tone for an engaging and enlightening session. The seminar, titled “Milestones Achieved Towards Mental Health and Well-Being”, was presented by Dr. Gulshan Talat Kahvechi (M.B.Ch, F.K.B.M.s), an expert in the field of neurology. Dr. Gulshan’s presentation was a great blend of academic rigour and compassionate insight, designed to elucidate the complexities surrounding epilepsy and its profound impact on mental health.

Dr. Abdul Samad Salahudin’s opening remarks highlighted the critical importance of raising awareness about epilepsy, a neurological disorder that affects millions worldwide. He emphasized the need for collective efforts in understanding, supporting, and advocating for individuals living with epilepsy.

With expertise, Dr. Gulshan delved into the intricacies of epilepsy, delineating the various types of seizures and their clinical manifestations. The inclusion of video demonstrations provided attendees with a firsthand glimpse into the diverse presentations of epileptic seizures, fostering a deeper understanding and empathy towards those affected by the condition.

Further, Dr. Gulshan elucidated the different phases of seizures. Her comprehensive analysis shed light on the multifaceted nature of epilepsy, dispelling misconceptions and fostering a more nuanced understanding among the audience. She delineated the appropriate steps to take during a seizure, empowering attendees with the knowledge and confidence to provide effective support in times of crisis. Moreover, Dr. Gulshan delved into the diagnostic modalities employed in identifying epilepsy, highlighting the pivotal role of electroencephalography (EEG).

The workshop aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It contributes directly to raising awareness and understanding of epilepsy, a neurological disorder affecting millions globally, thus promoting good health and well-being. Through expert-led presentations and discussions, the workshop provides valuable education and insights into epilepsy, promoting quality education on neurological health issues. By fostering empathy, understanding, and support for individuals living with epilepsy, the workshop contributes to reducing inequalities in access to healthcare and support services for people with neurological disorders.
