Drug Misuse and Abuse Community Service Project

On the 23rd of November 2023, the Faculty of Pharmacy staff at Tishk International University (TIU) conducted a meeting with senior pharmacy students to discuss the Drug Misuse and Abuse Community Service Project. Subsequently, on the 27th of November, research assistants along with the students visited Nilufer Girls’ High School and Ishik Ronaki International School. The purpose of the visit was to raise awareness about drug misuse, with a special emphasis on antimicrobial resistance.

Senior students Sana Rizgar, Shayma Abdulmanaf, Anana Shamoon, and Divan Bashir delivered an enlightening presentation to the secondary and high school students. They began by discussing bacteria, infections, antibiotics, and the mechanisms of bacterial resistance, and proceeded to explain how infections are treated and prevented. Additionally, they highlighted the risks associated with smoking, including the dangers of passive smoking. The presentation was followed by interactive games and activities, organized by Sahi Saywan, Saya Halmat, and Sima Mohammed, which included a Q&A session to test the students’ knowledge and awareness. Participants were rewarded with gifts for their involvement.

On the same day, another group of senior students, Danya Issa, Shanya Azad, Shler Niyaz, and Soma Saman, visited RISE International School to present on the same topic. Basoz Aso, Jwan Soran, and Srwa Salah also conducted games and Q&A sessions, culminating in gifts for the participating students.

This community service project was pivotal in combating drug misuse and abuse, particularly in highlighting the urgent need to address antimicrobial resistance. These initiatives are crucial in fostering informed and responsible behavior, thus contributing to the development of a healthier and more aware generation, and paving the way for a brighter future.
